What is the difference between dilaudid and demerol

I remember getting it twice in my life. One was a shot in the bum when I threw my back out about 8 years ago. Actually, I was Percocet not Demerol for me too.

A few years have gone by and over this time i have had 3 different docs All of them have given me demerol for my pain According to my research Demerol is not as strong as Oxycodone or Morphine but again everyone responds differently to different medications. Demerol works better for me than Morphine does, and that makes no sense either. Tramadol is a non-narcotic and works well for some ppl. It does have addictive qualities in spite of it's not scheduled status. We are currently down to about 60mg a day and are running out of supply.

We do have some 50mg Demerol and was wondering if that would help keep the withdrawals at bay and also help us with tapering off. How well does demerol work durring labor? I'm due in 9 days and I'm still not sure what I wanna take while in labor but I'm leaning towards demerol, so what are pros and cons about it? Hi everyone. It's been over 3 months since I got off Percocet. All is great and withdrawals were completely gone. But here is my new situation. I've recently had a health problem that causes excruciating pain and the doctors at the hospital gave me Percocet to help minimize the pain.

I'm on 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours and will be for two more days. Total has been about a week. Ha ha, Vicki. I was just testing you. Tee hee. Thanks for your support. Just struggling with what to take for my headache this morning.

Tylenol and a cup of coffee did not work. Don't want to take demerol. I have some ultram and percocet, but both of these or similar drugs have caused me several stomach spasms in the past and I am afraid to take them I would go to the emergency room, sometimes in real pain and sometimes no pain at all, after a while a got good at faking it.

I was taking Percocet , MS Contin and Demerol for chronic pain due to a kidney diseas but stopped cold turkey on Friday.

Like ConstructionJim I needed to separate need from want. Over the last several years it's definitely been more want to me so I felt I needed to just stop completely. Has 6 years experience. I work on orthopedics and pain meds are big on my floor! What is the difference and in your opinion and which medication is stronger? Patients ask me often which is the best choice. Percocet vs Lortab? And I dont know how to respond when patients ask. Specializes in ICU. Jul 18, I am a new grad but I will answer as a pt Percocet I thought worked better for the pain.

Specializes in Emergency. I've used demerol once, so I'm not very familiar with its efficacy; but my understanding is that it is similar to morphine in terms of pain relief, perhaps a little stronger due to its fast onset Specializes in NICU. IMO - depends on the need and the patient's response. Morphine doesn't do much for me, but Demerol knocks me on my arse. My response to patients would probably to ask what they've tried before, and how it worked for them.

Compare that with the options offered by their physician, and go from there. Dilaudid is the drug seekers choice so I think that may be the strongest other than Fentanyl which requires patient be in step down or ICU. I recently returned to floor nursing after 10 years away.

Ten years ago, I remember giving demerol to my patients quite frequently. Now, the hospital I work at doesn't even carry it! We use morphine and dilaudid, mainly.

When did demerol start to be phased out? Do lots of hospitals not even stock it anymore? Has 5 years experience. Morphine, in its various forms, has been the gold standard for pain control but we use a lot of Dilaudid - a good alternative to those with Morph allergies. Here the pharm drug of choice for addicts is Oxycontin so it has a huge street value - when drug stores get robbed, that's what they're going for.

They crush it and sniff, snort or shoot Oxycontin is in our formulary as an alternative to moprhine if morphine is not appropraite , we also use fentanyl - though mainly transdermal patches and the 'lollipops' on the wards but the passers of gas and some of the ED consultants like it as an IV.

Has 21 years experience. We used to give tons of Demerol. In , we stopped giving it all the time, due to there being a lot of seizures from it and started giving Dilaudid instead. It really ticked off a lot of patients. I guess you can get a better buzz from Demerol?

We don't give much morphine- it makes a lot of people itch, and Dilaudid seems to work better for the pain anyway. Has 14 years experience. Thank you for your enlightenment regarding pain management for both acute and chronic suffers.

Unfortunately, it has been my experience that most of our peers will continue with their negative attitude, labeling their patients as drug seekers and addicts, as well as frequent fliers.

McCaffrey has zero in on the problems with inadequate pain management. Over the past twenty years I've suffered from episodes of both acute and chronic pain. And I have dread going into the hospital for any type of surgery because of the judgemental attitudes of my peers after they have seen my extensive history of fractures and surgeries.

I have had nurses delay giving me ordered medication because they 'question' the degree of my pain. When I went back for my second Masters, I was happy to see the professors take the enlighten view of pain management.

Hopefully, given the slowly changing education attitude, we will have more nurses who will take the enlighten attitude toward patients. As for which medication I've used, in I was prescribed Demerol for bone pain and post surgery, following massive fractures and a three month stay. By , I was being prescribed morphine for a fracture of my ankle. By , it was dilauid following compression fractures of my thoracic vertebra.

In my area, it appears that dilaudid and morphine are used in patient and oxy outpatient. Dec 23, Regarding "drug seeking" behavior - as a chronic pain patient myself, I've learned not to specifically request what I know words for me because I'm immediately tagged as a drug seeker.
