Ever since his adventure in the center of the Earth, Sean Anderson has been looking for other places mentioned by Verne and other Vernians. He is notified about a coded message, and breaks into a satellite facility to fully receive it.
With the help from his stepfather Hank Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson he decodes the message leading him to find the map that leads him to Verne's mysterious island. Along with Gabato and Kailani, Sean embarks on a mission to find his grandfather, the legendary Vernian Alexander.
But unexpected problems arise as Alexander made a mistake that could change everything. Believe the impossible. Discover the incredible. Rated PG for some adventure action, and brief mild language. Did you know Edit. Trivia Despite this movie being a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth , Josh Hutcherson is the only actor to return from that movie. Goofs at around 58 mins After Sean falls from the giant bee and injures his ankle against a log several individuals say he has a "dislocated ankle" and his stepfather and grandfather reset it quickly and easily as you would do with a dislocated shoulder.
Although it is possible to "dislocate" your ankle it is not only very difficult to do, but due to the unique, and very stable, make-up of the ankle unlike the shoulder it only occurs in conjunction with either a fracture or multiple ruptured tendons of the area. Something that is very serious and extremely painful and definitely not something that could be easily remedied by 'popping it back into place' and then the individual being able to walk about and hike.
Quotes Hank : [singing] I see trees of green, red roses too. Decent action sequences, interesting special effects and hit or miss humor. Johnson flashes his charm when needed. None of the previous characters other than Josh Hutcherson return from the original, which doesn't help, but this is a fun enough warm up for Dwayne Johnson to prepare for Jumanji.
It's ok, it's a nice attempt at this old fashioned adventure film style, but always beware a sequel where the original cast feel like they've run away from it. CinemaSerf 9 December Right - I enjoyed this! Sure it's a hybrid of just about every fantasy film you've ever seen: "Jumanji"; "Jurassic World"; "Mysterious Island" - you name it, but it is still fun to watch. The script allows for some sarcasm, in-jokes - a few pithy one-liners from all concerned and some good old family bonding as they search their rapidly disappearing Atlantean island looking for Captain Nemo's long lost "Nautilus".
What is odd, however, is the really rather poor standard of the VFX. Go on - you'll be glad you did! Sequels with no more than one of its original cast members reprising his role don't always inspire confidence. Supposedly, Fraser encountering scheduling difficulties and could return. Caine is actually quite convincing as an elderly Indiana Jones in khakis and fedora.
Riding bumble-bees in a "Star Wars" styled race through the woods provides some excitement. Indeed, some of "Journey 2's" 3-D effects actually appear to fly at you. The Rock's quivering pectorals and flying berries are amusing as are the undersea scenes. Johnson provides the beef, while Caine delivers the exposition with his charismatic British accent.
The sequel takes place five years after the original. Josh has grown up considerably and rides a motorcycle as if he were Steve McQueen. The opening sequence when he plunges a dirt bike into a residential swimming pool is a fun way to get the action going. This is largely a family friendly film that generates a modicum of suspense and tension. Josh receives a coded transmission that contains the names of characters from Verne's novels from his grandfather Alexander Anderson Michael Caine , but it is former Navy code breaker Hank Parsons Dwayne Johnson who deciphers it.
The Vernian characters in the message alert Josh that his grandfather has sent the message. Josh decides to investigate, but he cannot get anywhere without taking stepfather Dwayne.
This one is much more imaginative than the original, and the scenes the Captain Nemo's legendary submarine the Nautilus. Okay, "Journey 2 the Mysterious Island" is hokum, but Peyton keeps things moving at a swift pace. The title of this movie is both clever and confusing: is it textspeak or a sequel? I don't remember Journey 1, do you? This time he is teamed up with his new stepfather Dwayne Johnson instead of Uncle Brendan Fraser on a new venture based on one of Jules Verne's novels he has also had a Mom upgrade, to Kristin Davis.
The two of them are off in search of Sean's missing grandfather Alexander Anderson Michael Caine , the original Verne enthusiast, with the aide of comedy helicopter pilot Gabato Luis Guzman and his comely daughter Lailani Vanessa Hudgens. This is a family movie with lots of fun fantasy visuals and action sequences. The characters work well enough and are mostly well played, although this must rank as one of Michael Caine's worst ever performances.
And Guzman's Gabato is drawn so broadly that, a lot of the time, he irritates rather than amuses. But Hutcherson and Johnson do well enough as the resentful stepson and the stepfather trying to create a relationship: this is actually a charming and moving heart to a rather slight movie.
Hudgens is, as always, cute, although her part requires her to hold back on her trademark smile until late in the day. This is a lot lighter in tone than Harryhausen's Mysterious Island from the 60s: the CGI effects are all slickly realised but, for me, the creatures don't have quite the same degree of quirky character that their stop-motion predecessors had. Nonetheless, I'm glad that we have both films. It is probably worth seeing this in 3D - it really suits some of the sequences. Josh Hutcherson plays the kid who receives a code from his grandfather who has been missing after an adventure.
He learns that his grandfather has located the mysterious island and he desires to join him. Here he is backed with an extremely corny yet detailed screenplay splashing the imagination with miniature elephants, giant insects, and a volcano that will spew gold.
They must leave the island before it becomes drown completely in water. The cast elevate the characters beyond cookie-cutter level. Johnson plays off the toughness with a desire to be accepted by Hutcherson. In turn Hutcherson gets injured when riding a giant bee in fleeing from a giant bird. Michael Caine plays the grandfather, big on ideas while amateur in family communication.
Luis Guzman plays a pilot accepting the challenge of transporting Johnson and Hutcherson to this island. Vanessa Hudgens plays Guzman's daughter who ends up crawling into a tight hole. Theme regards family and adventure and it works for that audience with its creative visuals and the mysterious world it presents.
HotToastyRag 1 December I actually didn't know this when I watched it, but Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the sequel to the remake of Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan Fraser didn't come back, but Josh Hutcherson did, and the story follows him as he and his stepfather, Dwayne Johnson, go to the famed "Mysterious Island" and meet up with his long-lost grandfather, Michael Caine.
If you're expecting a lighthearted kid's flick, you'll be very entertained while watching this movie. It's got some incredible special effects that immerse you in the environment; every time there's a Mysterious Island movie, I love seeing the gigantic plants and animals. Josh is sweet and easy to root for, and Dwayne is given some pretty funny comic relief bits. And who wouldn't love travelling to an exotic fantasy island with Michael Caine as their guide? It's a very fun movie, if you don't mind seeing Michael playing grandfather to a teenager, and has a lot to offer for everyone in the family.
While lots of movies claim to be "fun for all ages" and are really only enjoyable to toddlers, this one can truly be watched by the whole group. Grown-ups will be entertained by the grown-up actors, teens will be interested in Josh and his romance with Vanessa Hudgens, and the little ones will be awed by the scenery. FlashCallahan 2 June Sean Anderson receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island that should not exist. Unable to stop tracking the signal, he sets out with a small group on a journey to the mysterious island - a place few people have ever seen or lived to tell about.
What they find is an island of stunning beauty, strange and threatening life forms, volcanoes, mountains of gold and more astonishing secrets Yes, The Rock makes a lot of these movies, some of them are okay, and some of them feature Maurice Micklewhite flying a giant bee. It does exactly what it says on the tin, step father and son bond on a dangerous trip, boy falls for hot girl, and girls dad is the comic relief. The first movie was okay enough for my daughter, and this one fared pretty much the same, but I could have done with out the berry trick scene featuring The Rocks chest.
I know it might have been done as if to apologise to mothers for making them sit through it, but I didn't feel comfortable with this in a kids film. As always, though, he is good with this type of stuff, because the film isn't about character development, it's about set pieces and special effects, which are all perfunctory. The rest of the cast are so so, and Heaven knows what Caine was doing in this, he must need another house, because i cannot think of another reason as to why he would be in this.
It gets from A to B by way of C, and it's perfect for children, just very boring, and slightly creepy, for adults. I found this more enjoyable than the first one with Brendan Fraser. Here they try to combine different elements of Jules Verne classics and it is quite enjoyable. The story is alright not complicated at all. The scenery whether real or fake is quite beautiful and looks okay not over the top.
Same with the effects. Enough adventure and thrills without being too action like. The cast is okay. The Rock is a good actor he can do more than just action and can sing too! Looking a bit too bulky though. Michael Caine has quite a tough role for his age. Couple of faults: The dialog could have been more witty.
Vanessa Hudgens was a bit irritating in the first half. Overall worth a watch. On a flight for 11 hours makes you want to see a good entertaining flick so I thought, well, journey 2 looks fine. Was I wrong, stupid action, weird story, only the references towards Jules Verne I could dig. Michael Caine and the Rock, people I can watch were terrible here. And when they were talking how to make a girl love you my God, I almost fell asleep.
Childish flick, effects above mediocre, laughable and really bad for me. Journey to the Center of the Earth was one of the earliest 3D movies in this recent revival of what would already be the very tired 3D gimmick that has been invading our theatres, especially when films take the easy way out to convert to 3D during post production just to milk a few more bucks out of a weary audience. And this weariness now extends to this sequel with only cast member Josh Hutcherson returning as Sean Anderson, in a follow up story that's loosely set in yet another Jules Verne novel called The Mysterious Island.
But the premise also incorporates other novels such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Jonathan Swift's Gilliver's Travels and Verne's own 20, Leagues Under the Sea, with the former two being a bit of a riddle that Dwayne Johnson's tough guy Hank Parsons, the beefcake needed to fill the void left by Brendan Fraser who played Sean's dad, solves like a no-brainer, with his character's vast intellect of convenience to almost always managing to assemble things and clues together for whatever predicament he finds himself in.
Not too sure how fast a flood will submerge an island? Just ask Hank. Need to jumpstart an ancient submersible? Well, just ask Hank too, and he'll probably do a live demonstration while at it.
