Why hci is needed
It is a field that has been cited as one of the most important future research priorities by industry experts. In fact, U. Cultural and national differences play a part in designing HCI, because different users have different ways of learning and keeping knowledge and skills. Another consideration in studying or designing HCI is that user interface technology changes rapidly, offering new possibilities for interaction to which previous research findings may not apply.
HCI is an important factor when designing any of these systems or interfaces. Regardless if an interface is for an ATM or a desktop computer, HCI principles should be consulted and considered to ensure the creation of a safe, usable, and efficient interface. HCI is an important consideration for any business that uses technology or computer in their everyday operation.
Well-designed usable systems ensure that staff are not frustrated during their work and as a result are more content and productive. HCI is especially important in the design of safety critical systems, such as, for example, those found in power plants, or air traffic control centers.
Design errors in these situations can have serious results, possibly resulting in the death of many people. HCI is a key consideration when designing systems that are not only usable, but also accessible to people with disabilities. The core philosophy of HCI is to provide safe, usable, and efficient systems to everyone, and this includes those with different sets of abilities and different ranges of expertise and knowledge.
Any system properly designed with HCI user-centered techniques and principles will also be maximally accessible to those with disabilities. Good use of HCI principles and techniques is not only important for the end user, but also is a very high priority for software development companies.
If a software product is unusable and causes frustration, no person will use the program by choice, and as a result sales will be negatively affected. Today, very few computer users actually read the manual accompanying the software, if one exists.
Only very specialized and advanced programs require training and an extensive manual. Computer users expect to understand the main functionality of an average program within a few minutes of interacting with it. It focuses on activities ranging from design to development to evaluation of computer systems, with a goal of understanding how computers and technology affect people and society.
This course focusses on user interface design issues, due to their importance and the availability of other ICS courses that focus on other aspects of HCI. The growth in Human-Computer Interaction field has not only been in quality of interaction, it has also experienced different branching in its history. Human-computer interaction HCI as a field of inquiry necessarily evolves in response to changes in the technological landscape.
During the past 15 years, the speed of change has been particularly dramatic, with the emergence of personal mobile devices, agent-based technologies, and pervasive and ubiquitous computing.
Social networking has also profoundly changed the way people use technology for work and leisure. Who would have predicted a decade ago that smartphones would offer constant access to the Web, to social networks and broadcast platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and to hundreds of specialized apps?
Who could have anticipated the power of our everyday devices to capture our every moment and movement? Cameras, GPS tracking, sensors a phone is no longer just a phone; it is a powerful personal computing device loaded with access to interactive services that you carry with you everywhere you go. HCI includes the design stage which involves studying the principles of human behavior and understanding how human factors and cognitive models should inform design.
Students also learn about communication design and understand how implementation constraints should inform design as part of this phase. Next comes the implementation stage where students are taught the principles of computer science. This involves becoming familiar with different programming languages and learning about various algorithms and data structures. Students will learn about the evaluation process which involves usability testing and statistical analysis of the constructed product.
We are taught to contribute to the multi-disciplinary teams that typically construct software and technical systems and interfaces. We will learn about techniques for building successful user interfaces, design principles that make user interfaces visually clear and appealing, techniques for identifying needs for software and its success, and the people and organizations that will use their systems. Students need to study HCI not because it is their subject but it helps them a lot , for them to be more open in the modern world.
I am a student in an HCI subject and I am excited to study and learn more about this subject. I need to HCI because I need to know more about machine and human interaction. I am willing to learn the basics of interface designs and its evaluations. This subject will make me better in handling computers. HCI might not be easy, it could be confusing but it will help me be better in being a socially active person.
